  1. The rate of change of the velocity of a
  2. moving body. The acceleration due to gravity
  3. is the acceleration of a body falling freely
  4. under the influence of gravity; it varies
  5. slightly at different latitudes and
  6. altitudes. Retardation (deceleration) is
  7. negative acceleration; for example, as a
  8. rising rocket slows down, it is being
  9. negatively accelerated towards the centre of
  10. the Earth. Acceleration is expressed in
  11. metres per second per second (m s^-2) or feet
  12. per second per second (ft s^-2).
