The rate of change of the velocity of a
moving body. The acceleration due to gravity
is the acceleration of a body falling freely
under the influence of gravity; it varies
slightly at different latitudes and
altitudes. Retardation (deceleration) is
negative acceleration; for example, as a
rising rocket slows down, it is being
negatively accelerated towards the centre of
the Earth. Acceleration is expressed in
metres per second per second (m s^-2) or feet
per second per second (ft s^-2).
